Brian Smith

Among a series of promotions in its c-suite coming on New Year’s Day, Coca-Cola Co. promoted Brian Smith, currently president of Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, to president and chief operating officer of the beverage giant.

Smith will take over operations and report to CEO James Quincey, who will shift his focus to long-term strategy.

During his EMEA tenure, Smith oversaw the successful integration of the Europe, Eurasia, and Africa groups. Before that, in Latin America, he oversaw the acquisitions of several brands, including AdeS in Argentina and Santa Clara in Mexico. Fitting, as he joined Coke in Atlanta in 1997 as the LatAm group manager for mergers and acquisitions.

Among other moves, President of Coca-Cola’s Asia Pacific group John Murphy will become senior vice president and deputy chief financial officer on Jan. 1, and executive vice president and CFO on March 16. He will succeed Kathy Waller, who is retiring as EVP, CFO and president of enabling services.

Senior Vice President and CIO Barry Simpson will expand his responsibilities to oversee the enabling services functions that currently report to Waller. Simpson’s new title will be senior vice president and chief information and integrated services officer.

Nancy Quan will be promoted to senior vice president and chief technical officer, succeeding Ed Hays, who will serve as a senior advisor until his retirement on March 31. Quan is currently chief technical officer for Coca-Cola North America.
