Citigroup Inc. said Chairman of Michael O’Neill will retire on Jan. 1. The board chose current director John C. Dugan to succeed him on that date.

O’Neill joined the board during at the beginning of the Great Recession in 2009 and has served in the chairman role since April 2012. Dugan joined the Citi board in October 2017. His career includes five years at the U.S. Department of the Treasury, serving as Comptroller of the Currency, and nearly seven years at Covington & Burling LLP as a partner and as chairman of its financial institutions group.
