Paul Schoeman and Howard Spilko will be co-managing partners of Kramer Levin Naftalis & Frankel LLP on Jan. 1. They will take the reins from Paul Pearlman, who has served as managing partner since August 2000 and will be stepping down at the end of the year in accordance with a long-term succession plan. Also retiring at the end of the year will be Executive Director Nicholas Tortorella, who has been with the firm since 2001.

“We are deeply grateful for the many valuable contributions Paul and Nick have made over nearly two decades of stellar service to the firm, our partners, associates and staff,” Spilko said in a press release. “Paul Schoeman and I look forward to building on the innovative strategies that have placed the firm in such a strong position to compete successfully in a dynamic legal marketplace.”

Spilko, who joined Kramer Levin in 1996, serves as co-chair of the firm’s corporate practice, working with clients on domestic and international mergers and acquisitions. Initially joining the firm in 2003, he departed in 2007 to serve as chief assistant U.S. attorney for the eastern district of New York, before rejoining in 2009. His notable cases include securing an acquittal of a former Deutsche Bank Alex. Brown investment representative on all charges of conspiring to deprive the Internal Revenue Service of billions of tax dollars through the use of allegedly abusive tax shelters; and securing the acquittal of the former deputy speaker of the New York State Assembly, Clarence Norman Jr., on all charges of grand larceny and the filing of false instruments after a jury trial in New York State Supreme Court.
