Illinois’s primary elections held Tuesday were closely watched by both parties as they prepare to navigate the state’s difficult political landscape this fall.

Rep. Dan Lipinski (D-IL, 3rd) held onto his seat despite a strong challenge from activist Marie Newman, whose backing from pro-choice groups brought her within 2,000 votes of winning the Democratic nomination.

The Democratic primary in Rep. Peter Roskam (R-IL, 6th)’s district was a crowded one, and scientist Sean Casten is currently leading the polls in the close race.

The Sixth Congressional District, located in the Chicago suburbs, and Rep. Mike Bost (R-IL, 12th)’s district along the Missouri border have been rated “tossups” going into the general election. St. Clair County State’s Attorney Brendan Kelly won the Democratic nomination in the 12th District.
