Incumbent Sen. Tom Carper (D-DE) bested progressive challenger Kerri Harris in the primary on Thursday, September 6, 2018 by 30 points.

Senator Tom Carper

Carper has been representing Delaware in the Senate since 2001, after previously serving in the House of Representatives from 1983 to 1993 followed by Governor of Delaware from 1993 to 2000.

Harris is a political newcomer, community activist and Air Force Veteran who mounted a strong campaign, earning over a third of the vote in the primary.

Carper ran on his two decades of experience and was endorsed by former Vice President Joe Biden just weeks prior. After the primary, Harris pledged to support Carper in November while working with him “to put Delaware first.”

Carper will now face Rob Arlett, President Donald Trump’s former state campaign chair, who won the GOP primary with nearly 70% of the vote.
