On September 13, 2018, Senators Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren and Representatives John Larson, Terri Sewell, and Debbie Dingell were announced as the co-chairs of the newly formed, bicameral Expand Social Security Caucus which is already joined with a membership of 16 Senators and over 130 House members.

The caucus was organized with the added assistance from Social Security Works, ‘an advocacy nonprofit seeking to unite lawmakers behind expanding Social Security.’

A news release by Rep. Larson, the top Democrat on the House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Social Security states, “Social Security is not an entitlement. It’s the insurance that American workers have paid for. The members of this caucus will always fight for Social Security and the workers who have earned their benefits.”

A statement by Bernie Sanders, who has introduced a number of bills to expand Social Security in the past year, states “Our job is to expand Social Security so that everyone in America can retire with dignity and respect.”
