The U.S. ambassador to Panama, John Feeley, has resigned from his position effective March 9, 2018.

In a letter obtained by Reuters and dated December 27, 2017, Feeley wrote, “As a junior foreign service officer, I signed an oath to serve faithfully the president and his administration in an apolitical fashion, even when I might not agree with certain policies. My instructors made clear that if I believed I could not do that, I would be honor-bound to resign. That time has come.”

Feeley, a member of the Senior Foreign Service, has been ambassador to Panama since early 2016. Before that, he was principal deputy assistant secretary in the Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs from 2012 to 2015. He also served as deputy chief of mission at the U.S. Embassy in Mexico from 2009 to 2012.

After Feeley’s departure, the deputy chief of mission at the U.S. Embassy in Panama, Roxanne Cabral, will become chargé d’affaires.
