Tom Shannon, the under secretary of state for political affairs, announced today, that he will be retiring from the Department of State.

Shannon, a career State Department official, has been serving as under secretary since February 2016.

Shannon was as counselor of the department from 2013 until becoming under secretary, and prior to that, served as ambassador to Brazil from 2009 to 2013.

Shannon’s career in the United States Foreign Service spans 34 years, six presidents and ten secretaries of state.

Shannon will be staying on until his successor is named.
