On August 29, President Trump tweeted that White House Counsel Don McGahn will be leaving his position this fall. The president tweeted that McGhan will depart “shortly after the confirmation (hopefully) of Judge Brett Kavanaugh to the United States Supreme Court.”

This announcement comes after an August 18 report in the New York Times that detailed McGahn’s extensive cooperation with Special Counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation.

McGahn is a former commissioner and chairman of the Federal Election Commission.

Prior to joining the White House, McGahn worked at Patton Boggs LLP as a partner from 2013 to 2014 and moved on to serve as a partner at Jones Day from 2014 to 2017.

McGahn also spent some time on Capitol Hill serving as general counsel of the National Republican Congressional Committee from 1999 to 2008.

McGahn earned his law degree from Widener University in 1994.
