On Monday, July 23, the Senate confirmed Robert Wilkie to be secretary of Veterans Affairs by a vote of 86-9.

Wilkie currently serves as under secretary of defense for personnel and readiness, advising the secretary of defense on military recruitment, benefits, and overall readiness for operations. He briefly served as acting secretary of Veterans Affairs earlier this year, before being nominated to the position.

Wilkie also served as assistant secretary of defense for legislative affairs from 2006 to 2009, as vice president and director of business development at the engineering firm CH2M HILL from 2010 to 2015, and as a senior advisor to Republican North Carolina Senator Thom Tillis from 2015 to 2017.

He holds a bachelor’s degree from Wake Forest University, a law degree from Loyola University in New Orleans, and a master’s degree from Georgetown University.
