The Washington Post Local Desk announced a few editorial staff appointments.

Fenit Nirappil, who has been writing about local politics for the paper since 2016, will now shift his focus to City Hall and report to City Hall Editor Lyndsey Layton. He will join City Hall Reporter Peter Jamison to cover D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser’s run for re-election and to report on the City Hall’s efforts to address Washington, D.C.’s economic inequality and crime issues. Prior to joining the Washington Post, Nirappil was a state house reporter for the Associated Press Sacramento Bureau.

Education Editor Stephen Smith announced that Perry Stein will join the education team as D.C. school reporter. Stein joined the Post’s Local Desk in 2015 as a general assignment reporter. Prior to that, Stein wrote for the Washington City Paper.

Jennifer Barrios, the former deputy Long Island editor for Newsday, was named Montgomery County government and politics reporter, effective January 20, 2018. Barrios will report to Local Government Editor Debbi Wilgoren.
