On January 25, 2018, The Washington Post announced that Alan Sipress, national news editor since 2016, will become the new Middle East editor, overseeing Post reporters in Baghdad, Beirut, Cairo, Jerusalem, and Istanbul.

Sipress had two previous foreign post assignments—first, for The Philadelphia Inquirer as Middle East correspondent based in Cairo (1992-1996), and later for the Post as Southeast Asia correspondent based in Jakarta (2002-2006).

Prior to assuming his most recent role of national news editor, Sipress served as deputy national economy and business editor from 2008 to 2012 and as federal government and accountability editor from 2012 to 2016.

Sipress is a graduate of Princeton University.
