Scott Blackmun, the chief executive officer of the United States Olympic Committee since 2010, unexpectedly resigned due to health reasons. Blackmun previously announced in January that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer.

Susanne Lyons, a current Board director, was named acting chief executive officer during the search for new leadership.

“Given Scott’s current health situation, we have mutually agreed it is in the best interest of both Scott and the USOC that we identify new leadership so that we can immediately address the urgent initiatives ahead of us,” USOC Chairman Larry Probst said in a statement.

The announcement came as the United States Olympic Committee announced additional reforms to protect athletes from abuse.
