The American Petroleum Institute announced that Mike Sommers, currently president and chief executive officer of the American Investment Council, has been named president and chief executive officer of API effective in the Summer of 2018.
He will replace Jack N. Gerard who had earlier this year announced his intention to step down from his position by the end of his current contract, which expires in August 2018.
Prior to his role at AIC, Sommers held positions as chief of staff to House Speaker John Boehner and as special assistant to the President at the National Economic Council in 2005.
