A day after the police chief of Charlottesville, Virginia announced his retirement, Virginia State Police Superintendent Colonel Steve Flaherty announced his own after serving 42 years with the state police. “Having the opportunity to serve in the capacity of Superintendent these past 14 years and three months has truly been the greatest honor of my life,” the Colonel said in a statement.  “It’s just time for me to go”. While serving as Superintendent, he was chairman of the International Association of Chiefs of Police, as well as a member of the State and Local Training Advisory Committee for the United States Department of Homeland Security. Governor-elect Ralph Northam has appointed Virginia State Police Criminal Investigations Director Lieutenant Colonel Gary Settle to serve as the new superintendent.

 

In Ohio, Stephanie Loucka, the Department of Aging Director, announced her departure from the administration by the end of the year. “Stephanie has served the state of Ohio with honor and distinction. Her innovative, energetic spirit has propelled the Department of Aging forward, having improved the lives of countless Ohio seniors. I wish her good luck in her future endeavors,” Governor John Kasich said in regards to her resignation. He has named State Long-Term Care Ombudsman Beverly Laubert as the Department’s Acting Director. Besides working for the Department of Aging for over 20 years, Laubert also served four years as President of the National Association of State Long-Term Care Ombudsman Programs.

 

Louisiana State Representative Chris Broadwater announced he was stepping down in order to spend more time with his family. In a letter sent to his district, State Representative Chris Broadwater wrote “I thank God that he blessed me with an amazing wife who has been understanding and an unbelievable mother during my absence. However, I cannot continue to allow her to handle a disproportionate share with regard to our family.” In his resignation letter to the Speaker of the House, Representative Broadwater states that he will leave the Louisiana House of Representatives no later than March 1, 2018, but will step down earlier if a successor is chosen in a special election before March.

 

 

Municipal

Cities and Towns:

Philadelphia, PA – Effective January 2, 2018, Scott Petri will serve as Executive Director of the Philadelphia Parking Authority.  He replaces Clarena Tolson, who has been serving as Interim Executive Director.  Currently, Petri is a member of the Pennsylvania House of Representatives and will resign on December 31, 2017.  In a press release, Petri said, “My initial goal will be to conduct a top to bottom review of the agency and implement additional changes and reforms, to help regain the trust and confidence of the people we serve.”

Charlottesville, VA – Charlottesville Police Chief Alfred Thomas retired this week.  Deputy Chief Gary Pleasants is serving as head of the department while the city conducts a search for a new chief.  In a press release, City Manager Maurice Jones said, “Chief Thomas has served his country and three communities here in Virginia with distinction and honor.  He is a man of integrity who has provided critical leadership for our department since his arrival. We wish him all the best in his future endeavors.”

Pittsburgh, PA – Mayor William Peduto appointed Dan Gilman as his new Chief of Staff, effective January 3, 2018.  He replaces Kevin Acklin who is stepping down to return to the private sector.  Gilman, currently a member of the Pittsburgh City Council, will resign his council seat, and a special election will be scheduled for spring 2018.  In a press release, Mayor Peduto said, “Dan is the perfect person to continue my and Kevin’s work the last four years to make Pittsburgh a city for all. In fact, he’s been integral to that work all along.  I am grateful to Dan and his family for taking this next step in his public service to the city.”

 

Counties and Authorities:

Columbus Regional Airport Authority – The Board of Directors approved Joseph Nardone as the next President and Chief Executive Officer, effective mid-January 2018.  He replaces Elaine Roberts who led the authority for 17 years.  Nardone currently serves as Chief Executive Officer at the Wayne County Airports Authority.  In a press release, Nardone said, “I’m excited by the opportunity to leverage the strength of the community to advance air service development efforts and create even stronger partnerships benefitting the Columbus Region.  It will be an honor to lead the Columbus Regional Airport Authority, which is highly regarded in the industry for its best-in-class management and airport operations.”
