On January 30, 2018, Minnesota Governor Mark Dayton chose Jan Malcolm to serve as the state’s commissioner of health.
The appointment follows the resignation of Ed Ehlinger, who left after over the mismanagement of the state’s senior care facilities.
“Jan Malcolm brings exceptional experience in public and non-profit health management to the Minnesota Department of Health,” said Governor Dayton. “Her expertise will be invaluable as the Department works to protect and improve the health of all Minnesotans, especially our seniors. I thank her for her willingness to undertake this vitally important challenge.”
While Commissioner Malcolm is currently a faculty member at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health, she had previously served as the state’s health commissioner from 1999 to 2003.
Since then, Malcolm has assisted state public health programs as a senior program officer for the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and served as the CEO, president, and vice president of Courage Center, the Courage Kenny Foundation, and Allina Health respectively.
Her appointment became effective immediately.
