Gross replaces William Evans, who is retiring to become executive director of public safety at Boston College; Evans became police commissioner in 2014.

Gross is a 33 year veteran of the Boston Police Department, serving as superintendent in chief since 2014. As a patrol officer, Gross spent many years in the Gang Unit and Drug Control Unit, in addition to serving as an academy instructor.

Gross will begin serving as interim commissioner on August 5 until he is formally sworn in as commissioner; a swearing-in ceremony will likely be announced in the next few weeks.
