The Charlottesville City Council approved the appointment of RaShall M. Brackney as the next chief of police.

She replaces Al Thomas who retired in December 2017.

Brackney, who is a retired 30-year veteran of the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police, previously served as the chief of police for George Washington University from 2015-2018.

Brackney will begin her term on June 18.
