Johnson Joy, the chief information officer at the Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), resigned on March 20th.

Joy had been the subject of complaints from HUD employees, alleging that he misused government funds by illegally overpaying a contracting firm to which he had close ties.  Joy is now under investigation by the U.S. Office of Special Counsel for retaliating against one of these employees.

Joy was also revealed to be running a secretive religious nonprofit called GJH Global Ministries, which solicited donations, but whose ultimate purpose remains unknown.

Chad Cowan has been named acting chief information officer.

Joy’s departure comes on the heels of the controversy surrounding the purchase of a $31,000 dining room set for HUD Secretary Ben Carson’s office.
