On May 17, the U.S. Senate confirmed controversial nominee Gina Haspel to be the director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) by a vote of 54-45.

Ms. Haspel, who began working for the CIA in 1985, is the first woman to be confirmed to this position.

Haspel’s nomination attracted scrutiny due to her role in the brutal interrogation of suspected terrorists following the events of September 11, 2001. Following her confirmation hearing, Ms. Haspel expressed regret over the CIA’s past interrogation program in a letter to Senator Mark Warner (D-VA), who later joined five other Democrats in voting to confirm her nomination.

Ms. Haspel’s nomination was opposed by Republican Senators Jeff Flake (R-AZ) and Rand Paul (R-KY)
