Arizona Governor Doug Ducey (R) has named former Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ) to fill the vacant seat left by late Sen. John McCain, who died on August 25.

Jon Kyl

“I have committed to serving at least through the second session of the 115th Congress. I do know I will not seek this seat in 2020, nor any other office in the future,” Kyl expressed at the news conference held on Tuesday. Governor Ducey, however, is hoping that Kyl considers serving longer.

This appointment also means that Kyl, who had been guiding President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee, Brett Kavanaugh, through the confirmation process, now has a vote on Kavanaugh’s confirmation.

Kyl was first elected to the House of Representatives in 1986, representing Arizona’s Fourth District. In 1994, he was elected to the U.S. Senate, where he served alongside McCain for three terms before retiring in 2012.

Kyl, 76, has been serving as a lobbyist for Covington & Burling in Washington since leaving Congress.
