Senator James Inhofe

Senator James Inhofe (R-OK), who has represented Oklahoma in the U.S. Senate since 1994, was named chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee Wednesday, filling the vacancy left by late Senator John McCain.

This chairmanship position is seen as one of the more powerful leadership positions within the Senate.

Inhofe has served as acting chairman this past year while McCain received treatment for brain cancer in Arizona; McCain had chaired the committee since 2015.

Inhofe, a military veteran and experienced committee member, previously served as chairman of the Senate Environment Committee from 2015 to 2017.
