Vice Adm. Scott A. Stearney, 58, passed away on Dec. 1. In a statement, Chief of Naval Operations Adm. John Richardson said Stearney was found dead in his quarters and the Naval Criminal Investigative Service and Bahraini Ministry of Interior are investigating his death.

Stearney was commander of the U.S. 5th Fleet and U.S. Naval Forces Central Command, where he oversaw maritime operations in the Middle East. He assumed command in May after Adm. John Aquilino was selected to lead the U.S. Pacific Fleet. Some of Stearney’s other assignments included commander, Joint Enabling Capabilities Command; commander, Strike Force Straining Atlantic; and commander, Navy Warfare Development Command.

Rear Adm. Paul J. Schlise, U.S. 5th Fleet and U.S. Naval Forces Central Command deputy commander, has temporarily assumed command until Vice Adm. James Malloy takes over as the interim commander.
