The Department of Defense Chief Information Officer, led by CIO Dana Deasy, has undergone some recent staff changes.
Stephen Homeyer is the deputy director of the Joint Artificial Intelligence Center. The JAIC is a new defense organization that was created in response to the new department’s artificial intelligence strategy. Homeyer will play a key role in JAIC’s early stages.
Peter Ranks is the deputy chief information officer for information enterprise. A member of the Senior Intelligence Service, Ranks brings 20 years of CIA experience to DOD CIO.
Jack Wilmer is the deputy chief information officer for cybersecurity. Prior to his role, Wilmer served as a senior policy advisor and the principal assistant director for national security in the White House’s Office of Science and Technology Policy.
Frederick Moorefield Jr., director of spectrum policy and international engagements, is the acting deputy chief information officer for command, control, communications and computers and information infrastructure capabilities (C4IIC). He brings technical expertise and policy advice for C4IIC-related issues.
Kevin Mulvihill is the acting principal director for C4IIC. Frederick Moorefield Jr. held this position prior to becoming acting DCIO. Before Mulvihill’s current assignment, he was a senior program analyst researching DOD SATCOM modernization efforts.
The DOD CIO is tasked with providing information technology oversight to the secretary of defense, including but not limited to communications, spectrum management, network policy and standards, information systems, cybersecurity and information enterprises.
Deasy became CIO in May 2018 and has largely influenced the DOD Cloud Initiative and the defense department’s latest AI capabilities.
