Philadelphia Mayor Jim Kenney appointed Brian Abernathy as the next managing director for the city, replacing Michael (Mike D) DiBerardinis who is retiring.

DiBerardinis, who has been serving as managing director since January 4, 2016, will be joining the University of Pennsylvania School of Arts and Sciences in January 2019 as a professor of practice at the Fels Institute of Government.

Abernathy currently serves as first deputy managing director, a position he has held since January 2016. Prior to his current role, Abernathy was the executive director of the Philadelphia Redevelopment Authority from 2013 to 2015.

DiBerardinis’ resignation date is effective January 6, 2019, at which time Abernathy will assume his new role as managing director.
