This week, former Governor of New Mexico Gary Johnson formally declared his candidacy for United States Senate, tweeting “New Mexico deserves a strong, independent voice in the U.S. Senate.”
The announcement comes after the current Libertarian nominee, Land Commissioner Aubrey Dunn Jr., dropped out of the race at the end of July.
Johnson served two terms as Governor from 1995 to 2003 as a member of the Republican party and, more recently, ran as a Libertarian candidate for President in both 2012 and 2016 elections. In 2016, Johnson captured 3 percent of the national popular vote and just under 10 percent in New Mexico, setting a Libertarian party record.
In November, Johnson will face Republican challenger Mick Rich and Democratic Senator Martin Heinrich, who is expected to maintain his seat.
