Representative Martha Roby (R-AL, 2nd) defeated former congressman Bobby Bright (R) in Alabama’s Republican runoff Tuesday after failing to win a majority of the vote in last month’s primary.

Though Bright ran as a Republican this cycle, he had previously served in Congress as a Democrat and supported Nancy Pelosi as speaker of the House.
Roby was a vulnerable incumbent this cycle as she continued to deal with the repercussions of criticizing President Donald Trump late in the 2016 election. Her district overwhelmingly voted for Trump in November, and Roby became a vulnerable incumbent whose reelection hinged upon loyalty to the president and his agenda.
Republican leaders supported Roby’s reelection bid by helping her far out-raise Bright and by securing an endorsement from Trump, which gave her political absolution and ensured her victory.
Roby will now face Democrat Tabitha Isner in November’s general election.
