Jay A. Perman was named the fifth chancellor of the University System of Maryland, succeeding Robert L. Caret when his contract expires on June 30.
Perman is a nationally-recognized pediatric gastroenterologist who has served as president of the University of Maryland, Baltimore since 2010. He was previously dean of the College of Medicine at the University of Kentucky and has held faculty positions at Johns Hopkins University, Virginia Commonwealth University and the University of California, San Francisco.
Over the last decade as leader of UMB, Perman has overseen expansion of community engagement and interdisciplinary research, as well strengthening the institution’s ties to the city of Baltimore. His appointment follows a four-month national search by a 16-member committee chaired by the officers of the system Board of Regents.
