The election was called after the death of Ed Lee in December 2017; Mark Farrell has been serving as Interim Mayor. After a nearly five-month campaign, Breed won a special election that was held on June 5, 2018.

Breed served as a member of the San Francisco Board of Supervisors from 2013-2018 and as President of the Board since 2015.

Breed will fill the remainder of the term through January 2020, when the late Mayor Ed Lee’s term would have ended. Without the standard four-year term, Breed will be campaigning from the moment she takes office.

San Franciscans will go back to the polls to pick their next mayor on November 5, 2019.
