Senator Robert Menendez (D-NJ) regained his post as senior Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Tuesday after he was cleared of corruption charges made in 2015.

The months-long trial held last fall ended with a hung jury, but the Justice Department dismissed those charges last week.

The charges were based on allegations that the senator had accepted gifts and political donations from an eye doctor in exchange for official favors.

Now that Menendez has been reinstated as ranking member of the foreign relations panel, his replacement Senator Ben Cardin (D-MD) will become the top Democrat on the Small Business and Entrepreneurship Committee.

Though Menendez has been cleared by the Justice Department, he will now face a probe from the Senate Ethics Committee.
