On January 25, 2018, Massachusetts State Senator Linda Dorcena Forry of First Suffolk District announced her resignation from the state legislature, effective today, to serve as the Northeast Region’s vice president for diversity inclusion and community relations for Suffolk Construction, one of the largest construction firms in the state.

“After nearly a quarter century of government service, including my thirteen years as an elected official, I have decided the time has come for me to explore a new and challenging way to continue my work to build a more equitable and accessible economy in our city, state, and region,” Forry said to the Boston Globe.

A member of the state legislature since 2005, Forry won her current seat in a 2013 special election upset, making her the first non-Irish Democrat to hold this position in over half a century.

Since then, Forry has become a member of the Massachusetts Black and Latino Legislative Caucus and a rising star in the legislative chamber, becoming assistant majority whip in 2017.

In accordance with Massachusetts’ state law, a special election date for the now-vacant state senate seat will be decided upon in the next twenty days.
