During a press conference on February 5, 2018, West Virginia Governor Jim Justice appointed Dr. Michael Brumage as the next director of the Office of Drug Control Policy.

The office, which is overseen by State Health Officer Rahul Gupta, was created late last year in order to address and effectively combat rising drug addiction and overdose rates in the state.

“Dr. Brumage is the best and brightest and I honestly believe he is the best choice, if not the only choice for this position,” said Kanawha County President Kent Carper. “He is an inspirational leader who has worked hard fighting the drug crisis in Kanawha County and will work hard for the state of West Virginia.”

Dr. Brumage, a retired U.S. Army Colonel who holds three Legion of Merit medals and a Bronze Star, currently serves as the executive director of the Kanawha-Charleston Health Department.

Dr. Brumage’s appointment is effective immediately.
