On May 8, 2018, New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman resigned over accusations of domestic abuse.
An Amherst and Harvard Law School graduate, Mr. Schneiderman served as a state senator from 1999-2010, rising to the rank of deputy minority leader from 2003-2006. In 2010, he was elected to serve as the state’s attorney general, holding that position for the last eight years.
“It’s been my great honor and privilege to serve as Attorney General for the people of New York,” Schneiderman said in a statement. “In the last several hours, serious allegations, which I strongly contest, have been made against me. While these allegations are unrelated to my professional conduct or the operations of the office, they will effectively prevent me from leading my office’s work at this critical time.”

In his resignation letter, Eric Schneiderman announced that New York Solicitor General Barbara Underwood would serve as acting attorney general in his stead.
“I am honored to serve the people of New York as acting Attorney General. The work of this office is critically important. Our office has never been stronger, and this extraordinarily talented, dedicated, and tireless team of public servants will ensure that our work continues without interruption,” Ms. Underwood wrote in a press release.
A graduate of Harvard University and Georgetown University’s Law Center, she has served as the state’s solicitor general for the past eleven years and was also a former professor at Yale University, New York University, and Brooklyn Law School.
