On January 17, 2018, the American Petroleum Institute announced that President and Chief Executive Officer Jack N. Gerard will step down when his current contract ends in August 2018. Until his departure, he will continue to lead the association and help in the search for his successor. Gerard was previously president and chief executive officer of the National Mining Association (2001-2005) and the American Chemistry Council (2005-2008) prior to assuming his current position.
