National Democratic Institute (NDI) has named Former Ambassador Derek J. Mitchell to be their third President, effective September 2018.
Mitchell will replace Kenneth D. Wollack. who served as President since 1993.

“I am excited and pleased that Derek Mitchell has agreed to take the helm of NDI at this critical moment in the global struggle for democratic institutions and values.,” said NDI Chairman Madeleine K. Albright when announcing the decision. “He is a worthy successor to our distinguished outgoing President, Kenneth Wollack, and I am confident that he will guide our organization with boundless energy and clear vision for many years to come.”
Mitchell served as U.S. ambassador to Myanmar (Burma) from 2012 to 2016. Prior to that, Mitchell served as principal deputy assistant secretary of defense from 2009 to 2011 and then as special representative and policy coordinator for Burma from 2011 to 2012.
Currently, Mitchell is a senior advisor to the Stone Bridge Group (ASG) and to the United States Institute of Peace (USIP).
