Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI, 1st) announced Wednesday that he will not seek re-election this year, bringing an end to his time as Speaker of the House as well as his 20 years in Congress.

In his announcement, Ryan highlighted the tax law that passed earlier this year as a part of his legacy. Ryan also said that he is leaving Congress to spend more time with his family.

His announcement brings about a race for the speakership, likely between House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA, 23rd) and House Majority Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA, 1st).

Ryan will retire at the end of his term in January 2019.
